Antje Panniger is a porcelain designer that learned her craft at the famous German porcelain manufacturer MEISSEN® which is known worldwide for its 400-year history. In her studio she creates hand-crafted fine ceramic artworks. For her new collection "Starry Sky - Zodiac Signs" she was looking for fresh, beautiful motives to use as stencils. In light of the abundance of zodiac sign illustrations already available, the key factor was to create new, innovative, and unconventional motives. The material properties and resulting requirements for the manufacturing process also had to be considered: The different motive shapes have to be cut out of the french white clay prior to the burning process. With this in mind, the motive shape had to be designed so as not to compromise the structural integrity of the objects during the burning process. All motives had to be realizable in three different sizes. The light objects have to stand out and come to their own whether they are lit or not. It was also important that the silhouettes of the motives remain easily recognizable when cast onto walls or ceilings.
